Moving Day: The Sanity-Saving Checklist

Moving boxes stacked in a bright, empty room

Moving is one of life's most stressful experiences. There's just so much to think about—packing, logistics, utilities, address changes, cleaning, and somehow getting everything from point A to point B without losing your mind or your box of phone chargers.

You can't eliminate the chaos. But you can manage it with a solid checklist that keeps the important stuff from slipping through the cracks.

Here's a timeline-based approach to moving day sanity.

Four weeks before

This is planning mode. You're not packing yet (mostly), but you're setting yourself up for success.

Logistics

  • Book your moving company or reserve your rental truck
  • Request time off work for moving day
  • Start collecting boxes, tape, and packing supplies
  • Create a moving binder or folder for all important documents

Notifications

  • Give notice to your landlord (if renting)
  • Notify your employer of address change (for HR/payroll)
  • Update address with banks, credit cards, subscriptions
  • Forward mail through USPS (can schedule online)

Declutter

  • Go room by room and decide what to keep, donate, or toss
  • Sell items you don't want to move
  • Schedule donation pickups or drop-offs

Moving is expensive. Every box you don't move is money saved. This is the time to be ruthless.

Two weeks before

Now you're packing in earnest.

Packing strategy

  • Pack room by room, labeling boxes clearly
  • Start with things you use least (guest room, storage, seasonal items)
  • Create an "essentials" box for each family member (see below)
  • Take photos of electronic setups before disconnecting
  • Pack a separate box of cleaning supplies for old and new places

More logistics

  • Confirm moving company or truck reservation
  • Arrange parking permits if needed at either location
  • Schedule utility disconnection at old place
  • Schedule utility connection at new place (electric, gas, water, internet)
  • Update address with doctor, dentist, vet, pharmacy
  • Transfer or close gym membership

If you have kids or pets

  • Arrange care for moving day (they'll be happier, you'll be saner)
  • Pack their essentials last / unpack first
  • Update school records with new address
  • Find new pediatrician/vet if changing areas

One week before

The countdown is on. Final preparations.

Final packing

  • Finish packing everything but daily essentials
  • Defrost freezer if needed
  • Use up perishable food
  • Confirm all reservations (movers, truck, hotel if traveling)
  • Prepare payment for movers (often cash or certified check)

Prep for the new place

  • Confirm key pickup or lockbox code
  • Verify utilities will be on when you arrive
  • Do a final walkthrough if possible
  • Plan where furniture will go (sketch a floor plan)

Prep for the old place

  • Schedule cleaning (professional or DIY)
  • Plan final walkthrough with landlord if applicable
  • Gather all keys, garage remotes, etc.

The night before

Tomorrow's the big day. Set yourself up for a smoother morning.

Final prep

  • Pack your essentials box (see below)
  • Charge all devices
  • Set out clothes for moving day
  • Get cash for tips (movers, food)
  • Prepare cooler with snacks and drinks
  • Confirm arrival time with movers

Essentials box (keep with you, don't load on truck)

  • Toiletries and medications
  • Change of clothes
  • Phone chargers
  • Important documents (IDs, lease, closing papers)
  • Basic tools (screwdriver, box cutter, tape)
  • Toilet paper and paper towels
  • Snacks and water
  • First-night bedding
  • Pet supplies if applicable
  • Kids' comfort items

This box is your lifeline. It has everything you need to survive the first night even if boxes are still stacked in the garage.

Moving day

Deep breath. You've got this.

Before the movers arrive

  • Do a final walk-through of every room, closet, cabinet
  • Check the attic, basement, garage, and outdoor areas
  • Confirm nothing is left in appliances (fridge, oven, washer)
  • Take meter readings for utilities

During the move

  • Be present to answer questions and direct traffic
  • Check items off your inventory as they're loaded
  • Keep essentials box, valuables, and documents with you
  • Take photos of empty rooms (useful for deposits)

At the new place

  • Be there when movers arrive, or have someone you trust present
  • Direct furniture placement in real-time (saves moving later)
  • Check items off as they're unloaded
  • Inspect for damage before movers leave
  • Tip movers if appropriate

First day in the new place

You did it. Now make it livable.

Priority unpacking

  • Beds and bedding (you'll want to sleep)
  • Bathroom essentials
  • Kitchen basics for coffee and simple meals
  • Kids' and pets' areas

Safety and basics

  • Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms
  • Locate circuit breaker and water shutoff
  • Check that all utilities are working
  • Change locks if desired (especially for used homes)

Everything else can wait. Seriously. You don't need to unpack everything tonight. Set up what you need to function, order pizza, and give yourself permission to rest.

The week after

The dust is settling. Time to wrap up loose ends.

Administrative

  • Update voter registration
  • Update driver's license and vehicle registration
  • Register with new doctors, dentists, etc.
  • File change of address with anyone you missed
  • Update subscriptions and delivery services

At the old place

  • Final walkthrough with landlord
  • Return keys and collect deposit info
  • Confirm utilities are closed

Settle in

  • Unpack room by room at a sustainable pace
  • Meet neighbors
  • Explore your new neighborhood
  • Find your new coffee shop, grocery store, park

Moving without the meltdown

Moving will always be stressful. There's just too much happening at once. But a good checklist keeps the critical stuff from getting lost in the chaos. You might still feel frazzled, but you'll know the important things are handled.
