Your Summer Travel Prep Starts Now

Summer feels far away until suddenly it's here and you're scrambling to renew a passport or book a flight that's now twice the price.
Mid-April is the sweet spot. Far enough out to handle the slow stuff. Close enough that you actually know what trips are happening. If you've got summer travel on the calendar—or even just in your head—this is the week to start prepping.
Here's what to tackle now, before the rush.
The document check
Start with the paperwork that can't be rushed:
Passports
- Check expiration dates. Many countries require six months validity beyond your travel dates.
- Renewal currently takes 6-8 weeks for routine processing. Expedited is faster but costs more.
- If anyone in your household needs a first-time passport, that's in-person at a passport office—book an appointment now.
IDs and licenses
- Driver's license current? Some states take weeks for renewals.
- If you're flying domestically, you'll need a Real ID-compliant license or another accepted ID by now. Check yours.
Visas
- Research requirements for your destination early. Some countries require advance visas that take weeks to process.
- Even "visa on arrival" countries sometimes have online pre-registration. Better to know now.
The theme: anything involving government processing times should be handled immediately.
The booking window
Flights and accommodations are generally cheapest 6-8 weeks before travel. For peak summer dates, that window is now or soon.
Flights
- Set price alerts if you're watching a route
- Book sooner rather than later for July 4th weekend and late August
- Check whether basic economy works for you or if you need bag/seat options
Accommodations
- Popular destinations fill up. If you have specific places in mind, check availability.
- Refundable bookings give flexibility if plans change
- For vacation rentals, hosts often have cancellation policies—read them
Activities
- Big-ticket experiences (popular tours, restaurant reservations, event tickets) often book out months ahead
- If there's something specific you want to do, look into it now
You don't need everything finalized. But the stuff that sells out? Handle that.
The gear check
Summer trips often require specific items. Check now while there's time to order, replace, or borrow:
Luggage
- Inspect your bags. Broken zippers or wheels? Time to replace.
- Check size limits for your airline if flying budget carriers
Clothing
- Swimsuits still fit?
- Walking shoes in good shape?
- Any climate-specific gear needed (rain jacket, sun protection, layers for cool evenings)?
Electronics
- Power adapters for international outlets
- Portable charger working?
- Camera gear if you use it
Health and comfort
- Sunscreen that isn't expired
- Basic first-aid supplies
- Any prescription refills needed
The goal isn't to pack yet—it's to identify gaps while there's time to fill them.
The home prep
If you'll be away for a while, your home needs some attention too:
Before you leave (note for later)
- Mail hold or pickup arranged
- Plants watered or plant-sitter lined up
- Pet care confirmed if applicable
- Someone checking on the house?
Financial
- Notify bank/credit card of travel dates to avoid fraud holds
- Check foreign transaction fees on your cards
- Have a backup payment method
These don't need to happen in April, but flag them now so they're not forgotten.
The payoff: a relaxed June
When summer arrives, you'll be in good shape. Documents current. Flights booked. Gear ready. The only thing left is the actual packing—and that's a problem for future you.
Getting ahead on travel prep isn't about being uptight. It's about front-loading the annoying logistics so the trip itself is just... the trip. No passport panic. No sold-out disappointment. No last-minute scramble.
That's the goal.
